Tamara Johnson
Director of Programs
Tamara T. Johnson started her career as a classroom teacher in Detroit, where she quickly saw how powerful strong relationships could be in a school community. She had the unique opportunity to stay with her first class of fourth graders all the way through eighth grade—an experience that shaped her core belief: when educators build real connections with students and families, it can drive academic success, strengthen school communities, and maintain a culture of trust.
That belief has guided Tamara throughout her career as she’s served in roles as a Curriculum Director, Assistant Principal, and Principal in schools across Detroit. Shaping schools, developing talent and transforming systems in urban systems has been Tamara’s life’s work. At every level, she focused on building strong teams, supporting teachers, and creating communities where both students and staff felt seen, supported, and expected to succeed.
Before joining the MEWI team, Tamara served as the Executive Director of Talent Pipelines and Professional Growth for Detroit Public Schools Community District. In that role, she led district-wide efforts to attract, train, and retain great educators. She served as the inaugural Director for On the Rise Academy, Michigan’s first district-led alternative certification program, and worked to make sure aspiring teachers had the tools and support they needed to grow and stay in the profession.
Tamara has built systems that last by centering people first. Whether leading cross-functional teams, coaching leaders, or forging partnerships with higher education and state agencies, she has remained grounded in the belief that equity and excellence begin with strong adult culture and an unwavering commitment to students.

I live in the same city where I grew up. 10 minutes from my parents/childhood home.
I’m the mom of two amazing daughters; Riley, a rising college junior and Dale, who’s a full fledged adult.
